Hello! I will be the proud owner of a O. fulgidus soon. I am in the process of setting up the cage and I am curious if anyone is willing to share pictures showcasing their cage design? Does anyone incorporate arboreal nesting/refuge boxes? Also, what interesting behaviors have you observed with your snakes in captivity? I will post pictures of my cage once completed.

Hey folks, I will be picking up a group of Liopholidophis lateralis, labelled as Madagascan Water Snakes, this week and was wondering if anybody on here had any experience keeping them. As far as I can tell this is the first time they have been imported to the UK but was wondering if somebody over the pond had seen them before.
From what the importer says, they have not taken rodents or fish yet and it is likely they will need to be fed frogs, at least at first. But this is a pretty little species so I thought I would give them a go and see what I could do with them.
Any advice welcome.

Hi, its been awhile since I have posted, I thought you all might be interested in hearing that my Oxybelis fulgidus pasted away today. She was imported as an adult in December of 2000. I am guessing that to be adult size that she had to at least two years old at time of import so I am estimating her age at about 15 years.

I thought this might be interesting to share. I read a 2002 study done by extracting venom from the Duvernoy's gland in various rear-fanged colubrids under anaesthesia. In part of the study, they then injected the venom into mice to determine the LD50 (median lethal dose).
I deduced the following from a data table that was provided:
• Dispholidus typhus (boomslang), Thelotornis species (twig snakes) and Rhabdophis species (such as red-necked keelback) were the most venomous of the snakes tested. These three rear-fanged colubrids are considered to pose a serious threat to humans, and deaths have occurred.
• When Boiga dendrophila (mangrove snake) venom was given IV it took approximately 12.6 times the amount of boomslang venom given IV to kill a mouse.
• When mangrove snake venom was given IP (intraperitoneal) it took 1.85 times the amount of Hydrodynastes gigas (false water cobra) venom given IP to kill a mouse – which could be interpreted to mean that, as far as mice are concerned, false water cobras are 1.85 times more venomous than mangrove snakes.
• By that line of thought, boomslangs are also 12.6 times more venomous than mangrove snakes, and 6.8 times more venomous than false water cobras.

I used to have this girl. She had the fullest stripe I've seen on a baroni and great color. She became eggbound a year after laying this clutch.
I just picked up this male. His father hatched from one of the eggs in the previously pictured clutch. He was bred to an unrelated female so this grandchild carries some of her genes.
Also picked up this girl. She is unrelated to my original and has a nice stripe going.

Ah nice, the male is nice but that female is outstanding. I have looked for a heavily stripped females to pair with the male I got from you but haven't had any luck.

Anyone notice mussie can kill prey like large snakes with jaws alone? I saw one that killed a big viper just by crushing its head and twisting and did it in seconds. Lots of blood. IT did not use constriction or its venom.
I always wonder why do mussie have so many killing methods? THey have the jaws of of an indigo. THeir constriction is stronger than a kings also.
THey eat water cobras or they will try to kill a water cobra bigger than they are. Mussies unlike indigo do not care how big the snake is they will still kill it. It does not always go their way if they attack a boa or something the tables can turn. A snake with so many methods.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the ideal weight or age to breed mussuranas (boiruna maculata). I have a 1 yr old 3 ft female that is growing like a weed and might be close to 5 ft long if she keeps growing at same rate by the time she hits 2 yrs she is built heavy too. The male is a different story. Same age but growing at slower pace. Might be 2 ft long and half the weight of the female. Thanks in advance. Any replies appreciated.

Hi guys, its been a while since I last checked this forum.
Kayvon, you are right in that male mu's produce a lot of yellow semen, so you can figure what happened without being there.
That said, once in every few years a female tries to eat a male (3-4 times in 20 years) , so I always watch them, which means I may need up to 6 hours until they unhook, worth every minute in my opinion. (Dont worry, they usually hook up for less than one hour).
Mussuranas being so dear to me, once in a lifetime would be too much of a loss.
About breeding size:
In the beggining , I got one wc young female that came in pregnant, she was not above 3 ft long, and safely laid 4 eggs. HOWEVER, cb ones frequently retain eggs if bred too early.

Five foot should be fine for the females. If the male is three years old he should be able to breed but I would be sure that the females belly is filled to capacity before putting a snack sized snake in with her. Mine have been pretty shy breeders, only breeding in the night. I will tell you that mussurana males produce copious amounts of semen that stain shredded aspen bright yellow so it is easy to tell in the morning if there was breeding.

I waited until my females were 5 foot. First year was all slugs, second year had some success.

The babies are doing very well. Eating small anoles pretty well. Some take them easy and some I have to put the anole head in their mouth but then they gobble them down just fine. Here are some pics of the little beauties.

these are from a female that was one of the original 11 imported by glades back in 2001, interestingly, while the sow has a nasty spinal deformity above her cloaca (apparently caused by too high an incubation T) none of 6 young thus far have exhibited any kinky tendencies :}

Big Congrats! I purchased a pair of last years hatchlings from Black Pearl Reptiles and I had to make one of them a pied. Mine are doing great. How old and what are the lengths of your pair? Checked the incubator before bed tonight and tadaa! 2 babies hatched, 2 pipped, one possible slug. My husband was deployed for basically the entire time they were in the incubator so I just used all the info in this forum by myself.
