The primary reason for this is fear of introducing non native parasites.

I'll sometimes catch a lizard and keep it for a week or so, and then release it exactly where I caught it (my yard) - and the only thing that sometimes is an issue, is another lizard has claimed the territory already and a turf war results.

If they are released exactly where they were collected and have not been exposed to other captive reptiles, it shouldn't be a problem - legal or not.
