My thoughts on the legacy of the Crocodile Hunter... Echoes the thoughts of many others here - sorry, it's long.........

The Great Croc Hunter, Steve Irwin... RIP 9/4/2006

I can't believe he's gone. I'm still in shock, I guess. I've never been affected as much by the death of a celebrity, as I've been affected today by the death of The Crocodile Hunter. It is a very sad day, indeed. Steve Irwin did more to change the opinions of the general public worldwide about misunderstood animals like crocodiles, venomous and nonvenomous snakes, sharks, and the like than any other TV naturalist.

He died too soon, but he went out in style - while doing what he loved. He has already inspired the next generation of herpetologists and TV naturalists and will continue to do so. He will continue to be a role model and hero for millions of children and adults. His passion permeated everything he did, living life to the fullest, and exemplifying the idea of "conservation through education". When he was made, the mold was broke. A great man, he will be sorely missed.

My heart goes out to Terri, Bindi, Bob, Steve's Dad, and the rest of the Irwin family, Steve's best mate Wes, as well as their extended family at Australia Zoo. I hope the joy and passion that Steve brought to life will sustain you through the rough times ahead, until life is joyful again. Reptile lovers like us loved Steve too.

I keep thinking of the huge scaly and furry pack of animals that was there to greet him on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Mary his favorite crocodile, and his beloved dog Sui at the front of the pack, wagging her tail furiously, standing beside Steve's Mom.

We say Rest In Peace, but all of us who love reptiles, and love Steve Irwin, know he's in the Otherworld wrangling dinosaurs, dragons, sea serpents, and all the creatures of myth, legend, and prehistory..........

Steve, I wish I could have met you. I am an animal educator too, taking my pet reptiles to nature centers, libraries, schools, etc. I've experienced the joy that sharing these animals can bring - reflected in a young child's eyes. My passion for educating people about these animals, is a reflection of the passion with which you educated us all. I sat in my 'reptile room' and cried today. You are an inspiration. You lived your daily life like we all dream we could. Thank you. This one's for you, Stevo! Crocs Rule!!!

“On Brighid's morn,
The serpent will come out of the hole.
I will not harm the serpent,
Nor will the serpent harm me.”
-From the Carmina Gadelica, Scottish Highlands

"If you talk with the animals they will talk with you and you will know each
other. If you do not talk to them, you will not know them and what you do not
know, you will fear. What one fears, one destroys."
-Chief Dan George (1899-1981)

"What is man without the beasts?
If all the beasts were gone,
men would die from great loneliness of spirit.
For what happens to the beasts,
soon happens to men.
All things are connected."
-Chief Seattle (Duwamish Tribe)
