Baur, B. 1986. Longevity of horned lizards of the genus Phrynosoma. Bulletin of the Maryland Herpetological Society 22(3):149-151

Bertrand Baur from Switzerland holds the longevity record for most the HL species. You are right a P. mcalli lived 18 years in captivity. He told me natural sunlight, proper lighting cycles, proper temperature cycles, ants in the diet and small prey are the key. He feeds his HLs ants from the genus lasius, small crickets, and occasionally small grasshoppers and small freshly shed small mealworms. Of course offering water regularly is also key.
