You really don't need a ballhead on there, your really just need a tripod screw mounted to the stick. Could you cut the end of the handle and fit a tripod sized screw in a wooden dowel plug into the end of the handle?

Of course, I don't know that this is going to give you any increase in stability.

Have you considered a lightweight, collapsible tripod?
I have a Slik Sprint Mini, which is a sturdy but collapsible tripod that is as easy to carry as my camera. If fits in my camera bag. It costs about $60, but it is worth every penny I spent.
