Canon's HF-DC1 good w/ S2 IS for macro?

Working a xmas present for my girlfriend here.

My gf got an S2 IS several months ago and I am very pleased with how much she has learned now that she has a better camera. I was looking at accessories for her camera and I think the one she needs the most is a flash (HF-DC1).

Take a look at the photos in the link below and you'll see the type of pictures she takes. We do a lot of amphibian and reptile photography, but she likes doing flowers as well. So you can see that a lot of the time the camera is in macro mode.

My question for the forum is if this HF DC1 can be used for macro photography?
Are there any diffusers made for the flash?
Are there suitable (and cheaper) alternatives to the Canon brand that would be better suited for macro photography?
