Hi,

My toad (bufo americanus) had a clump of shedded skin stuck to his stomach for a while (he never was very good at the whole shedding thing :P), and I didn't think anything of it but I noticed there was a tiny bit of blood where he was sitting before I picked him up yesterday, so I checked his stomach and it looked like there was a small open sore of some kind beneath the shedded skin. I've been letting him soak in his water dish and rubbing it gently with a wet Q-tip to see if I can get the skin off (he's also been rubbing at his belly while in his water dish), and I think it's gone, but I'm not really sure how to describe what's on his stomach. I took a picture, which I've attached. Here's an additional photo: http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/2804/spotty2ij5.jpg

He's had a similar sore on his stomach before, and it healed after three weeks of care (keeping him in a smaller plastic container with paper towel and a cloth for him to hide in, rinsing his water dish daily with Detinol, as well as rubbing his stomach with a cottonball dabbed in Detinol and then washing it off, something a herp vet told us to use for one of my frogs who had a bacterial infection). My mom suggested putting some petroleum jelly on it so that it wouldn't stick to the paper towel or cloth, but I wasn't sure if it was safe to use on toads, let alone open sores or anything like that, so I figured I'd ask. Any advice on how to treat him would also be appreciated.

Thank you.
