my AST that basked too much ended up dead, so don't ignore the symptom! they might bask rarely, but it's unusual. other than the basking, mine showed no real signs of trouble until 2 days before he died, when i found that his plastron was very soft and red (blood below surface) and smelled. i looked him over almost daily and by the time he showed real signs, it was way too late. john richards thinks he probably got a really bad bacterial infection, likely from feeder fish.

personally, i'd treat for a bacterial infection with a qualified vet and hope for the best. i know that's annoying bc the vet visit is likely to cost more than replacing the turtle, but it's worth it. best of luck.
