This shot is interesting -







There are a couple of comments I can make about this shot. First off, I like it.



I think you might have been better served to stop down a little more (use a higher f/stop). You used f/5.6 which means your depth of field is so limited that the scales in the reflecion are in focus, but the real scales aren't. You don't need to stop down all the way, but an f/stop of f/9 or f/11 would have fixed this probably.



Also, try to make sure you are as perpendicular as possible to your subject. Because you weren't the scales at one end of the picture are in focus and at the other end they aren't.



Another thing to consider is the lighting. Because you are shooting on a dark background, your camera is going to tend to overexpose the shot. That's why the scales in the reflection (which should be dark) are properly exposed while the scales on the snake are overexposed. You might try some exposure compensation next time. Something like -0.7 EV would probably work, but it's digital so play around as much as you like!.
