i too would say that it was a young male, and a very good looking one at that.
female water dragons tend to lose the blue coloured stripes early on, or they fade. the dark lines behind the eyes are a little bit of a tell tale, but really i find that while the female has an equine, long face, the male tends to look more like a dinosaur with a snubbier nose.
only one way to tell and i would wait for a while before getting this done and that would be a probe.
