Leeway Corucia Research Center (LCRC)

Greetings,

There is a new (4/07) paper on Corucia. Characterization of 21 microsatellite marker loci in the prehensile-tailed skink (Corucia zebrata).

Although this is a worthwhile topic with the potential to identify genetic drift and pairing compatibilities, there are limitations. In addition to the paper being accessed by a closed, members-only journal, to purchase the paper costs $36. Also, the research is based on 16 individuals only from the Philadelphia zoo of a single subspecies only - the common monkey skink -Corucia zebrata zebrata (underlined). For the research to have greater meaning and benefit, more individuals of both subspecies (the Northern Solomon monkey skink - Corucia zebrata alfredschmidti {underlined} and the common Solomon monkey skink {Corucia zebrata zebrata}), should have been tested to mark any genetic variation. Still, if additional research is conducted, this can be of great potential benefit to those working with this endangered Genus.

Sincerely,
Brian
LCRC
