Hello I too live in new england and I have a sulcata a baby leopard, a redfoot and one greek with one more greek coming soon.

unless you are fully prepared and willing to house a sulcata for life. go with a smaller tort that will thrive indoors. it takes a lot of time and money to make a good life for alot of torts in a colder climate. I love all of mine but if you ask my wife I am an obsessed tortoise geek! I get so much enjoyment and relaxation out of them and I enjoy teaching my kids about them.
if I had to only have one it would probably be a sulcata but that doesn't mean it is a good choice for you only you can decide. I would recomend research and more research and more research to find the species that best suits your lifestyle, budget and dedication to the animal.

hope this helps some...
