Genetic future studies in Corucia:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leeway Corucia Research Center (LCRC)

Hello to all working with Corucia,

Budget restraints are severely affecting everyone. We can certainly relate. What Edward Louis and others has started to achieve is a great start. The next phase would be to establish separate markers for the two described subspecies of Corucia zebrata (underlined) and branch out from there. Of course, the question is when and by what means. A combined effort in promotion of the merits of this research to a potential Grant source is something you, and I, and Sherri, and others can work on. The two subspecies being known and described would be the first step in establishing markers as mentioned. Captive Corucia of the subspecies: Corucia zebrata zebrata (underlined), were not properly documented upon importation from specific islands in the Solomon Archipelago. As a result, further genetic research within the subspecies C.z.z., should be conducted on the various Solomon Islands where they reside. This would be the next logical step. Once the markers are set to specific islands, then tests with the captive contingent can be utilized to determine island origins and proper introductions for maximum breeding success.

The Northern Solomon subspecies (Corucia zebrata alfredschmidti) (underlined) could also be tested to see if any variation between the two islands (Buka and Bougainville) exists where this subspecies resides.

If all of this is done, there should be in evidence from the genetic markers, , a genetic drift growing more pronounced away from the Locus Typicus of C.z.z.- Quadalcanal. Corucia zebrata alfredschmidti (underlined) , as pheripheral isolates on the northern fringe of the range of Corucia, should show the greatest genetic deviation.

Sincerely,

Brian

LCRC
