A White's seems like a pretty good choice as frogs go so the short answer is "yes". I'm not often short-winded so here comes the in depth answer:

I haven't had too much experience with the species but the experience I do have is from when I was 7 or 8. I'd say that with a little help the white's is a really good species to start off with. Definitely help him get it set up and read up on general care if you haven't done so already. Feeding, misting, and keeping the living environment clean can be a really benefitial experience for someone that young and I don't think it's too much to handle. I started off with Hermit Crabs at 6 and it definitely got me interested in small animals in general which eventually developed into my career as a wildlife biologist. Just remember that when your kid goes off on sleep-overs and field trips the frog is all yours...

I guess the one word of advice is that amphibians do not always make a great "first pet" because the temptation to take them out and play with them will be pretty high and it's very stressing on the animals. It would be stressing on most animals but with the possible exception of a fish it must be most stressing on amphibians just because they are so sensitive to whatever touches them. As long as your kid understands it's not something you can just take out of the cage and play legos with then there won't be any problems. If that type of thing will be a problem then some sort of gentle and sociable reptile might be better or even hermit crabs... those things were great. That aside though, I don't see any problem with the species you have in mind. Let us know what you decide to go with
