My turtle is biting himself.

Yes, he seems to have a... condition where he is continually biting his right arm. This alone is disturbing, but lately his mouth seems to get stuck on his arm. He will swim in circles trying to break loose, and one time I had to lift him out of the water because it looked as if he was running out of air.

I have already looked up a vet to take him to, but I am unsure of whether they will be able to do anything. Is this something that has happened with other people's turtles? If so, I'd appreciate any insight concerning this... condition.
