I've found mites on a lot of alligator and fence lizrds I caught. It depends on where you catch them. One time I caught 10 or so alligator lizards at a park and they all had mites. The 3 biggets died before I could treat them and the mites spread to all of my other reptiles. That was almost 2 years ago and my fence lizards and stil being treated. (The alligator lizards are clean) I've also seen grain mites come in coconut fiber and "repti-bark" or whatever its called. So I think it's all about where you get the lizard from. Not really the substrate. I've used coconut fiber, cypress mulch, sphagnum moss, and aspen without any real problems. IMO, aspen looks cleaner. As for the grain mites, I don't think they do any harm to the lizards. (They might irritate the lizards though)

Hope this helps.
