FLORIDA TIMES-UNION (Jacksonville) 11 August 07 Snakes, bare trash, salutes and such (Terry Dickson) {Excerpt}
Now and then, we have to clear out some stuff from readers that crosses the desk or that we hear over coffee.
Here are three of them.
This one comes under the heading of weird events.
Last week, Leigh Lane called her husband, Doug, to come home to do something about an unwanted visitor, a rattlesnake coiled up in the backyard of their St. Simons Island home.
Usually, snakes will go on and leave you alone if you don't bother them, but this one was persistent. Also, the Lanes live in a neighborhood with kids, cats and dogs that don't mix well with rattlesnakes.
The rattler overstayed his welcome - actually his unwelcome - until Doug came home and got his shotgun.
Now this is the weird part. When Doug shot the snake, a squirrel fell dead out of an oak tree at the same instant.
Did the noise of the gun give the squirrel a heart attack? Did a shotgun pellet defy the laws of gravity and physics and hit the squirrel?
The general opinion is neither. The squirrel had likely been bitten by the rattlesnake and scurried up the tree. The snake was probably patiently waiting for the squirrel to die and fall out of the tree.
