I am a complete novice when it comes to digital photography. And, I most definately know that it is all about the user and even the lens. With that said I'd like advice on my situation.

Currently, I am using a Canon A550 (7.1 MP). I would like to move up to the DSLR, and seriously thinking of the Nikon D40X or the Canon XTI. I called 3 camera stores, and got a billion different answers....2 of the 3 recommended the Nikon over the Canon. Please note, they did the recommending, as I know nothing overly technical of the two.

My situation:
1) I'd like to keep the camera a minimum of 2 years
2) Over time, I would like to upgrade the kit lens for close up shots of rattlesnakes (safely close that is)
3) which brand allows for more 2nd party accessories

Thanks in advance for you advice!
