Quick story.. I was at my vet's a couple of weeks ago, she showed me a sulcata that someone else has had for 2 years. Brought it to her because it's not eating or staying awake.
The tort was about the size of an adult ornate box turtle but the plastron feels like a sponge.
She said whoever had been keeping it fed the poor thing nothing but straw. Not hay, not grass, straw. There is nothing IN straw, zero nutrition but it's alive!
Poor thing has a blockage from the straw, she can't give anesthesia to remove the blockage yet because of the poor nutritional condition it's in.
The tortoise is eating real food now, doing better- she's giving it calcium supplements too. It may not live but oh my gosh can you imagine how tough that animal must be to actually still be living right now?
I saw the vet last Thursday & she said the tortoise is awake more, eating more so there's a chance it may make it. I sure hope so!
I always wonder why people get an animal like that & then don't bother to get some info on how to care for it.
They keep the vets in business though....
