I have spadefoot toads as pets, although I have been unsuccessful in breeding them. Currently, I have Easterns, New Mexicos, and Couch's. I use the same set up for all 3, because I have found it to be the most successful.



I use CAREFRESH PET BEDDING--the grey/non-dyed kind. This is a light substrate that is very easy for the toads to burrow in. It is easy to clean, and the toads seem to love it! I always make sure to have enough substrate for the toads to fully burrow themselves in.



I also make sure I use light-weight plastic water dishes. Why? Because no matter how big your cage is, or how deep your substrate goes, the spadefoots will INSIST on burrowing under the water dish. I've found that by using a light-weight dish (such as seen in my pictures), the toad will not get injured when it decides to burrow under the dish.



Spadefoots are very weird about "cagemates". NEVER put more than three spadefoots to a cage! Too many spadefoots in one cage will cause too much stress, and your toads may get sick.
