hello, I found a pair of eastern newts in my turtles' pond in November, i don't think that they would have been able to crawl out of it themselves and the nearest creek had dried up so I kept them, they are doing well in a rubbermaid container(I'm going to get them a bigger cage soon). I've always been a reptile person so please let me know what I'm doing wrong.They feed well on newt food(those little floaring things), boiled egg yolk, and chopped earth worms. The female eats a ton and is very fat. I think that she may be gravid, but I'm guessing that I've mixed up her seasons by taking her from 40 degree water to a 75 degree room. How can I tell if she is gravid? When will she lay her eggs? What size cage should she have and how deep should the water be? I can't post pictures, I don't have a camera, but I see a lot of newts around my yard and in the water and she is by far the fattest I've even seen. is there any color change when they are gravid? How ould I take care of eggs or babies if she lays?
