Wow, and i thought it was just me that had the same experiences. I have been with my wife for the past 18 years as of this June, and I'm going to be 35 in August (do the math...). It was my wife that actually rekindled my desire to have snakes once again, as she has ALWAYS been supportive of my passions (aside from martial arts, it's snakes of course....). When we first met, about a year later, she suggested we get a pair of snakes that we could keep as if we were like two "couples" -- hey, we were young -- though processes were different back then, lol. So we started with a pair of greenish ratsnakes, and then a hatchling Burmese python, and it snowballed to a collection of just over 100 snakes by 1994. At present, my wife can rattle off various types of snakes at a whim, and I get so excited when she does that (in a very quiet and humble way of course....). The last time she did that was when I was going through a ton of old pictures from "back in the day" before beginning graduate studies in 2003. She was able to recall Mandarin ratsnakes, San Francisco garter snakes, Trans-Pecos ratsnakes, Dumeril's boas, and, which this is the kicker, was able to differentiate between a desert rosy boa and a Mexican rosy boa. Bless her little heart. Now if I can only get her to eat her Porterhouse medium rare......
