I would see no reason they could not produce viable offspring.

If it was a Box turtle you where talking about I could see a few problems it would have.

Spotted Turtles are very similar in body type to painted turtles and they are not to distantly related to have a successful pairing. IMO.

I would think a Bog turtle would be a more likely canditae with a spotted but painted's are not so different in make up where it would be a problem in my opinion. Keep us posted and reintroduce them for a better chance.
