The picture's a little blurry, but it looks like you have an American toad; the only other possibility in your area is a Fowler's toad, and they have very similar care.

In my opinion, one of the best substrates for toads is chopped coco fiber. You can find this in compressed bricks at most pet stores, sold as 'Eco Earth', 'Bed-A-Beast', or similar. Just follow the directions on the package to moisten and expand the stuff. One brick should be about right for a 10 gallon aquarium. Also provide your toad with a hiding spot, such as a curved peice of bark, and a shallow water dish, big enough for him to soak in.

You don't need to worry about any fancy lights, and you can keep the cage at room temperature. Toads will eat almost anything that moves and will fit in their mouths; gut-loaded crickets or roaches are a good staple diet. Moths, small earthworms, waxworms, and mealworms are good occasional treats. Some toads will eat small pieces of beef or pinky mice, but you should use these sparingly if at all.

Good luck with your new pet!
