There are quite a few, but your climate will and size of tortoise will dictate your choices. I like various grasses and clovers in temperate climes. I assume you are in the desert, and you can do great things with spineless cacti (check with Mexican community, many will grow them in gardens for Nopales), various succulents/Sedums/Aloes etc. I often scatter bird seed and water it down, making a thick carpet of vegetation in the early Spring before my tortoises emerge from hibernation. Lavatera/Rose of Sharon, hibiscus, makes a great cover bush, grows fast and the tortoises love the blossom. See Bob Thomas's article on plants at the California Turtle and Tortoise club website. Try to visit other tortoise keepers, and see what they have done, you will learn a lot and they will often give you plants, cuttings. Landscaping a tortoise enclosure is fun! vic h.
