I have a western yellow bellied that I have had for about 5 years now. It was at least a yearling when I got it. I started it on crickets, then lizards, then eventually small mice. It was a secretive eater for a long time, like a couple years- now(finally) its an animal! It pounds rat fuzzies/pups right from my hemostats after lunging at them out of the cage. Its about 40" long now.

Personally, I would put it in a cage by itself, with a good hide or two, in a low traffic area, and leave it alone as much as possible until it starts eating regularly. Try throwing a few crickets in there first- Put a chuck of carrot or potato or something in there in the corner so the crickets dont bother the snake. Fence lizards should work well too- watch for mites though.
