I would suggest,

Lizards:

Leopard Gecko
Bearded Dragon (probably most expensive to set up from my list.)

Snakes:

Ball Python
Corn Snakes

The most important thing I can tell you, is do your homework. Make sure your reading up (from reputable sources), on what specific requirements your new friend will need. The type of environment, temperatures, food, etc. I normally buy a couple of books such as "The Manual" series. I like to have a hard copy of information to refer to. And check around on the web for more info.
