reptiles by nature arent truely handlable animals, it all depends on their tolerance towards it. you could have the "most agressive" species in the world, and have an amazingly handlable animal, but at the same time, you could have something thats supposed to do well with handling hate it. the only thing you can do is attempt to handle it more often, in hopes that it calms down. it is close to being the right size, only about an inch small, but thats fine because they can grow a little faster or slower, just be sure its nice and fat, and itll be ok
