If you're trying to provide her a medium to nest in then I would go with a sand-peat 50/50 mix. Dan's advice with the top coat of sand seems good for locating the site. If you're planning to then remove the eggs for controlled incubation I would go with vermiculite. You can get it at a garden shop. Just mix it with equal parts water and it should hold the moisture well throughout incubation. Or you could just soak it and ring out the excess moisture. I'm no expert, but this was recommended to me and I had good (though limited) results.

Dan, were those eggs definite goners? Did you toss them out already? Disappointing. I feel for ya.
