Go to this link, and contact John Richards. Hes a breeder, and knows all the laws about them. I purchased from him and live in Illinois, he basically informed me on everything I had to do to own one in Illinois.

I was very satisfied with my order, four little guys... raised them up for a few years and let em go in a huge lake with a river next to it where I didn't think anyone would bother them. Have only seen one wild ally in my entire life in Illinois, was walking through a lake nearby in the shallows and stepped on him. He was like 17 inches long. The most impressive looking herp I ever came across. Immediatly after catching him, set him right back into the water and contacted john to purchase some babies with the intent o let them go in the same lake.

This species of turtle has become pretty scarce in many places of America so een the smallest amount of help to try and get them back into the wild is better than nothing. Okay I'm rambling, anyway, contact Richards he has fine quality turtles and should be able to inform you about whether or not you can own one in your state and if so, what applications you will need to obtain.
