I think a Leo would be good also, although I prefer them to be in a larger tank. Only get one if you decide to put it in that tank. Viper Geckos have always seemed cool but I'm not too sure about how flighty they are or how easy to handle. A pair (get 2 females only, males are aggressive and pairs will breed which I don't recommend for a beginner since you have to worry about the female's calcium intake, hatching the babies, etc) of vipers would be fine in a 10 gallon.

That's really all I'd suggest for a beginner, unless you would be interested in amphibians too in which case Pacman frogs are also cool, but pretty unhandleable. And Anoles are really recommended only 1 per 10 gallons of tank space, they are highly terretorial so it's good that you don't want them! As far as snakes go though you could get a rubber boa in a 10 gallon, they aren't very pretty but are still pretty cool, inexpensive (to buy at least) little snakes. Good luck!
