Good luck to you as you try to find chucks! Just returned from Phoenix where I spent a day hiking around on South Mountain searching for chucks. The temp got up to the mid-50s and the sun was out sporadically. Didn't think I'd find any chucks and I didn't, except for ONE. It was not a fun thing. I saw this sneaky-looking road runner bird walking toward a big pile of huge rocks. The bird suddenly began to RUN. It occurred to me that it might have spied a chuck and that its intentions were not good. Sure enough, it reached the rock pile before I did. It pecked down into the rocks and pulled out a small chuck right before my eyes. I kept running, hoping to scare the bird so it would release the chuck, but it ran off with its catch. BUMMER! That was the only lizard I saw that day.

South Mountain was very neat beyond normal proportions, to me, just because I know it's the home of many chuckwallas. Fascinating place, but frustrating too. There are many little yellow signs that prohibit people from exploring offtrail because of flora and fauna protection. I don't know the tricks to find chucks. Sure hope to return someday during warm months so I can see some chucks basking. Would be awesome to succeed.
