you don't have to freeze them. i live next to a major highway, so i have a large ditch that is always full of water, minnows, crayfish, and huge bullfrogs. i just get a large dipping net with a long handle, and i scoop some minnows out, deposit them in a bucket partially filled with water, and carry the bucket up to the snakes and let the minnows flop around in their cage. it's pretty fun to watch them pounce on the minnows. but you have to watch them, because every now and then, two snakes will start eating the same minnow, and the bigger snake will accidentally suffocate or crush or even eat the smaller snake. if that happens, just grab the snakes and thump on the bigger snakes head until he lets go. but that's only happened once or twice with me. for bigger snakes, you will have to find a bigger body of water to get shad and other fish.
