A lot of it is getting a thick enough soil substrate base for the plants to develop a good root system which helps their strength considerably. Minimum soil depth seems to be about 3 to 4 inches for standard size cages.

I've heard that using natural plants may pose health issues to the animal. What type of plants do you use with your GTP's, or would be recommended as "safe" for the animal?
