A while back I posted a message about some eggs found late form an injured box turtle, well those 2 eggs out of 5 after 90 days collapsed. Two days later I get a call from a neighbor that there is a turtle in her basement window well that can't get out. I head over thinking it’s probably another painted turtle as we live a few blocks away from the Cuyahoga River in northeast Ohio. I was shocked to find a female box turtle down in that window well. She must have been there a while as her front nails where wore down to about an eighth of an inch.
Her shell was busted all around the bottom as if raccoons or cats or something was trying to get onto her, it’s really a mess. We soaked her in some Epson salts and she ate some bananas. She then went to sleep for 2 days and was up again today, she’s in our house for the winter.
We have had a mild winter to start so she should make it ok now. Glad we are able to save her.
Enclosing a photo, she's a beauty.
