you can try soaking the gecko...find a shallow container, and add luke warm water to it so there's enough to submerge the feet. It needs to be a small container with lid so the gecko doesn't just climb out of the water. After about 10 minutes or so, gently pull the dead skin from his toes. Mineral oil can also be directly applied to the feet as well, though this is likely to seriously hamper the gecko's ability to climb till the oil comes off.

Keep in mind that crested geckos can 'curl' their toes up when they are not clinging on something, but should be able to spread them out fully when grasping a surface. Hold him in your hand and let him climb around your fingers to observe how he is spreading and grasping with his feet and toes.
