>>Will using iodine on a turtle's shell seriously effect it if it's the wrong type of iodine? I had a seriosly sick turtle that'd died just recently and I wonder if I was to blame. I put regular anti-bacterial iodine on it's shell and three days later it passe!
>>If it was my fault-and the wrong kind of iodine-would it have caused respiratory failure or poisoning? I found the poor critter gasping as if having a pneumatic illness. Yet another turtle I'd had recenlty died the same way and that without me using iodine.

It sounds like the turtle had a respiratory infection - it probably needed systemic antibiotics (i.e. injectable antibiotics) prescribed from a vet. Did you take your turtle to a vet for diagnoses? Iodine is iodine - it's all antibacterial, that's why you use it for shell issues. Did the iodine get into the eyes, mouth, or nose? Was the turtle gasping or listing to one side before you started the iodine? Why exactly were you using iodine? If it was just on the shell, and you rinsed off the turtle before placing it back in the water, then iodine would not have caused the death.

What are your water and basking temperatures? Do the turtles have hide spots, regular light cycles, and not over crowded? All of these things can affect immune health, and thus disease potential in pets.
