It is a breeding frenzy that won't quit and increases every tme you attempt to thwart it! Did you ever see the Disney version of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, where the brooms are bewitched and doing his work to lug water and are flooding the Sorcerer's castle and every time he takes an axe to them to stop them they splinter and multiply?...
