Hi, when they are ovulating/ with eggs/ they turn orangey stripes or splotches some just a small strip somewhere , others look so vibrant they look painted Okay, now this is the time a male will get pretty fired up and evenually they usually mate, which would then if all goes well make her eggs fertile. Sometimes the female even gets more orange after breeding. You usually know when they have eggs, they have a full / firm feel, sometimes you can even feel or see the outline of eggs.
** A female can lay eggs even if she has not been with a male.

* Now if you have a female that gets orangey and is full but never lays and then starts to get thinner again and her color may fade as time goes on then she may have re-absorbed her eggs, they are able to do this. Just as there are the sad times when they are full with eggs and time comes and they do not lay and become eggbound and usually the out come is not good.

So I hope I have maybe helped "somewhat" to clear some of this Orange color stuff up for you, hehehehee
