Here's the story. I walk my dog in the woods every morning. In spring and in fall, when the nights are cold or chilly, I see a lot of snakes out basking trying to warm up after the cold night. Some days I'll see 15 or 20 in just 1/2 hour. Mostly I see Dekay's Brown Snakes, but some Smooth Greens and Garters too.

One day last week I saw the sunshine reflecting off a red snake. That red color immediately caught my eye. I picked it up and held it for a minute thinking "this must be a hypo" and placed it back where I found it and went on my way. Ever since that day I have been kicking myself for not having my camera with me!

I found that snake again basking on a black rock after a very chilly night. I took it home for a photo shoot and will soon release it back where I found it.

No, there will be no hypo Dekayii breeding projects or hypo-dekayii.com website.
