Mike, I've had ringnecks get out of all sorts of cages. These days I use the clips that come with 10-gallon screen lids to hold the lids down tight. Real tight.



I use a mix of fine duffy soil (southern Michigan is a mix of soil types courtesy of multiple glaciers, and there are places where gophers push piles of really fine sandy soil to the surface where I can harvest it), and enough fine peat moss from a garden center to make the soil light and a little fluffy. I moisten the soil regularly, and try to avoid leaving the soil dry more than a day or so. I use distilled water to avoid buildup of salts as the soil dries through repeated waterings.



I keep a heat pad under one end of the tank and the snakes spend most of their time at the heated end. I was a little surprised at that but it's their choice and they like the heat. It seems to help them digest, which is good if you have enough food to keep them satisfied at a higher metabolism. The system works great and I've had no escapes but the snakes do spend time tucked into the ledges at the top of their aquaria, pushing on the lids, so I know if I ever forget to clip those tops I'll have free-range ringnecks.
