KUSA (Denver, Colorado) 20 October 10 Lucy comes home: The tale of the traveling tortoise (Jeffrey Wolf)
Westminster: A 30-pound desert tortoise may not have been capable of making the swiftest of getaways, but somehow Lucy went missing. On Tuesday, however, this story got a decidedly happy ending.
The Rockley family did everything they could to find their tortoise after it crawled away from its home in Westminster two weeks ago.
After putting a post on Craigslist, and encountering a number of Good Samaritans, they learned Lucy had been spotted near Highway 7, where someone moved her out of the road. Next, she was spotted at a neighbor's house, then she was found by a mover, who dropped her off at a pond. However, desert tortoises don't actually like water.
The Rockleys were worried she might not last with the cold weather coming. But, on Tuesday they got a call from someone at a feed store in Lafayette who said had Lucy in safe-keeping.
Thomas Haislit found Lucy about a week ago after a neighbor of the feed store spotted the tortoise outside. He brought her in and fed her some corn and apples until he found out her owners were looking for her.
"We just can't believe it. We've had hundreds of people reach out to us and help with the search for Lucy. I cannot believe how generous people are in Colorado. It's amazing. Thank you," Sheila Rockley said.
The Rockleys gave Haislit a $100 reward. They say they won't give her as much free reign in the yard now that they know she can escape.
