Funny you mention armadillo lizard....they truly are easy to care for and very hardy, as well as inexpensive. The only drawback is that they aren't quite as tame as some lizards but they aren't TOO skittish either. Another choice is a fireskink. Beautiful, hardy, easy to tame and also inexpensive. A fireskink will eat earthworms and cooked egg as well. They do require humidity but are still easy to care for, they need some moist eco-earth to burrow in but they aren't high maintenance at all.
