AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION 06 December 10 US depends on Aussie antivenom: WikiLeaksAn Australian snake antivenom factory has been listed as vital to United States national security, a cable released by whistleblower website WikiLeaks reveals.

The cable lists the Mayne Pharma factory in Melbourne as the sole global supplier of "crotalid polyvalent antivenin" - rattlesnake antivenom.

The cable, which was sent out by the US State Department in February 2009 to all US missions abroad, sets out a long list of key facilities around the world the US considers to be important to its security.

The definition of US national security, revealed by this list, is broad and all embracing.

Officials were asked to list all installations whose loss could critically impact the public health, economic security or national security of the US.

Also on the list is the Southern Cross undersea cable in Australia and a cobalt mine in Congo, as well as communications hubs and gas pipelines around the world.
