My husband took our jcp x diamond to his regular vet on Tuesday. He was very displeased by what my husband told him the ER vet told us.
He changed his meds (thought in my other post I was told this wasn't good, but I wasn't there to interject) from Baytril pills to Amikacin injections every three days. They gave him one at the vet's office, and we just gave him his second.
His reasoning did make sense. He told my husband that pills could be dangerous if the snake is not eating. He has nothing in his stomach, and it's hard for the pills to digest. That does make sense.
The ER vet wanted to do an xray, which we couldn't afford (especially at an ER), and our regular vet said at this time it's unnecessary, that all of his symptoms are respiratory. He gave up four injections, and said to call him when the last is completed with an update on his status.
He also told us to flatulate him, which earned a wth? from me. We had noticed his rectum was distended, and the vet said he was full of gases, again because he's not eating. So the vet showed my husband how to flatulate him and poof! gone. Though my husband said it was by far one of the grossest things he's ever heard.
The ER vet told us to soak him three times a day, but that is impossible. Our regular vet told us we could continue that, and once a day was enough.
He told us to continue to try and feed him. He told us to put a vitamin C pill in the rat's mouth. But being that this snake has always refused prekill and will only eat live, he told us if that was the case, to gut load the rat on bell peppers and oranges for the vitamins. We will try and feed him a prekill tomorrow and hope it works.
He is still very strong, he proved that while trying to hold him to give the the injection. His mucous seems to be lessening, and that is good. He does not seem to be happy about the higher temps in his tank. He always stayed in his branches, but the past four days he's been spending more time on the bottom of the enclosure.
