You can take pictures like this at home--put your gecko much closer to the camera than you are.

It's the same trick fishermen use to make their catch look bigger, and there are also numerous "giant rattlesnake" pictures (also fake) circulating.

You can usually tell they're fake because one element of the photo (either the animal or the person used for scale) is out of focus (because they're closer/further in relation to the other element). In addition, notice that in pictures like this, the animal is never beside the person, but in front of them--easier to create the illusion.
