Thayer's kingsnakes come in 2 color phases, one with tight alternating red,orange bands known as a "Leonis Phase", the other with broad orange/red saddles known as a "Milk Snake Phase", both on a greenish grey background. Greeri are similar in appearance, but do not have the larger saddles. Mexicana kingsnakes have an almost dark blueish gray, or dark gray green background, with deep read saddles or bands. Ruthven's kingsnakes look very similar to many Milk Snakes, with heavy red saddles on a light grey, or greenish gray background. Hybridization with other kingsnake varieties is common and has resulted in many genetic color morphs not seen in nature.
