Males can do that. Happened to me, he was very healthy and simply resumed feeding again.



You do not have to cool persay, but a cooler ambient temperature is good during that time, while still providing a basking area. This way the snake can choose. Some people reduce the temps at night only during this time, and that includes basking temp too.



Can't tell you if you "need" to do this for health reasons.
