Orlando - A man in Orlando, Florida, was arrested for illegally bringing cockroaches into the state for use in an online business that sells bugs for reptile food.
Derek Rader was the recipient of the Dubia cockroaches which can be two inches in length and are illegal in Florida. They are not native to the state but said to be excellent food for lizards and other reptiles.
WFTV reports: Local reptile experts said the roaches are a good food source for lizards. They have more meat and more nutrients than crickets. They're also quieter and easier to handle, and once you have some good breeding roaches, you won't have to buy more.
Disgusted neighbors were angry and pest control specialists feel that introducing the non native species could create a problem in the area.
The Orlandosentinel reports: “Rader is also accused of altering a state permit to show he had permission to import the banned roaches, according to the report.”
Radar is facing two felony charges and a first degree misdemeanor.
