Nice animal, John. I have a couple of "red-eyes" myself. During development in the egg, if the pattern of bands ends up positioned just so that the eyes are located where a red band is supposed to form, the irises can end up being red. At least that's my working theory...
I've been reading about how widespread segmentation genes are and how they work, and it's all pretty amazing. When you are developing in thew womb, they keep your head from forming where your butt should be! At least for most folks - LOL.
All that being said, I love the look of a red-eyed thayeri. Hey, here's a fun project for someone out there -- are red eyes in thayeri a heritable trait?
